Peterite Haathim emerge Junior National Swimming champ
View(s):A.I.M. Haathim from St. Peter’s College emerged as the Boys Junior champion at the National and Junior National Swimming Championship, organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) and concluded last Sunday at the Isipathana College Swimming Pool complex.
Haathim, 14, won an impressive feat of four gold medals and a silver, securing two new junior national records. His outstanding performance earned him 27 points overall—23 points from his victories and four points for breaking national records.
The young swimmer made history by setting a new junior national record in the 200m Individual Medley. Haathim clocked 2:18.01, breaking the 10-year-old record held by Olympian Kyle Abeysinghe, who had set a time of 2:18.75 in 2014. Haathim also claimed the junior national record in the 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:09.38, surpassing the previous record of 1:11.70 set by A.N.N. Dabare of Ananda College in 2023.
In the 100m Butterfly, Haathim earned a silver medal with a time of 1:00.04, breaking the junior national record. However, Jayden de Silva of Stafford International School took the gold with a faster time of 59.58. Haathim’s impressive haul included gold in the 50m Butterfly, 200m Individual Medley, 100m Breaststroke, and 400m Individual Medley, making him one of the most successful swimmers of the competition.
