St. Sylvester’s and Hemamali GS win Youth Boxing titles
View(s):St. Sylvester’s College and Hemamali Girl’s School, two leading schools from Kandy, emerged champions in the BASL Youth Boxing Championship to retain the General Jagath Jayasuriya Challenge Trophy conducted by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at Sahas Uyana in Kandy.
Stubbs Shield champions St. Sylvester’s won a total of nine medals consisting of four gold, three silver and two bronze medals while Hemamali GS won five gold medals and a silver. Formerly a tournament for cadet boxers, this tournament was for 17-18 year olds.
Royal College, Colombo were runners-up in the Boys Division, also winning a total of nine medals comprising two gold, two silver and five bronze medals. Sripalee College, Horana were runners-up in the Girls Category, with a tally of eight medals consisting of four gold, a silver and three bronze medals.
I.N.D. Thathsara of Nalanda College, Colombo, who won the flyweight (51kg) title defeating Sylvestrian P.G.T.P. Maduwantha, was adjudged the Best Boxer in Boy’s while K.M.N. Sandeepani of Hemamali GS, who won the flyweight (52kg) title, was picked as the Best Boxer among Girls.
There were outstanding performances from Stubbs Shield Best Boxer Royalist Thenuwan Meegalle, who outpointed Sylvestrian T.L. Dharmapriya in the featherweight (57kg); Best Boxer at this meet last year, Sylvestrian K.G.S.K. Heshan, who a tough duel against Sri Lanka junior international and medallist A. Azil of Zahira College, Colombo in the lightweight (60kg) final; and Trinitian Shezan Odayar, who scored a stunning first round win over another Sri Lanka junior international, Royalist Malith Bandara in the middleweight (75kg) final. N.M. Abdulrahaman (54kg), J.M.T. Deshan (63.5kg) and S.G.M. Azhar (71kg) were the other gold medal winners for St. Sylvester’s.
All-Island National School Games Best Boxer and Best Boxer at this meet last year Chathuni Siriwardena (50kg), H.G.S. Sewwandi (57kg), U.G.S.D. Perera (63kg) and A.M.U. Devindi (81kg) were the other gold medal winners for Hemamali GS.
