All education decisions to align with national policy: Dy minister
View(s):The Government has decided that all future decisions to be taken with regards to education, high educational and vocational studies by provincial councils will have to align with the Government’s national education policy.
Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said the decision was taken at a meeting held on Thursday which was attended by the Governor of PCs as well as chief secretaries and provincial education officials.
“The provincial officials agreed that it was important for them to align with the national education policy so as to avoid confusion in policies,” Mr Seneviratne told Education Times.
The recent confusion over the issue of a circular issued by the Western Provincial Council prohibiting teachers from giving private tuition was cited as one instance where there was a conflict of the provincial council decision with national policy, he said.
Mr Seneviratne said that there should be consistency in the general schooling system as well as higher education and vocational studies.
The PCs were also requested to align their policy on teacher transfers, recruitment as well as appointments with the government’s national education framework.
The Deputy Minister said the same consistency in policy will have to be maintained in the conduct of examinations as well.
He said that if the PCs work in line with the national policy, there will be no overlapping of policies in the education sector, and this would be beneficial to all.
He added that the education sector will be a part of the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ campaign from this year, and all state education institutions have been informed to ensure the necessary programmes are in place to make the programme a success.
