Bridges of friendship: Japanese scholarships for teacher training programme

The Government of Japan has proposed to offer the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) scholarship for a teacher training programme.

The goal of the programme is to foster human resources that would act as bridges of friendship between grantees country and Japan through study and contribute to development of both countries and the wider world.

Accordingly, international teachers who wish to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities as teacher training students are encouraged to apply.

According to the qualification and conditions, the applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of submission of application would not be eligible to apply for the programme.

However, persons with dual nationality who also have Japanese nationality whose place of residence at the time of submitting application is outside Japan are eligible to apply choosing the nationality of another country.

 

Applicants should be born on or after April 2,1990 and also should be graduates of universities, teacher training schools and have worked as teachers at primary, secondary, educational institutions or teacher training schools (excluding universities in their home countries for a period of five years as of October 1, 2025.

The applicants must be willing to learn Japanese, interested in Japan and deepen their understanding of Japan while doing research and adapting to living in Japan.

The applicants must submit health certificates in a prescribed format signed by a physician attesting that the applicant has no physical or mental condition hindering their study in Japan.

The Japanese embassy in Sri Lanka has also informed the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka to nominate an eligible candidates list along with the completed application forms and other required documents before January 31.

The written academic examinations and interviews would be jointly held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign employment and Tourism, Ministry of Education and Vocational Education, and Japanese Embassy by February 26.

Applicants should be able to arrive in Japan in September or October two weeks before the course starting date. The period of the scholarship would remain between October 2025 and March 2027.

The grantees would be paid an allowance of 143,000 yen per month after arrival in Japan and a supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 or 3000 yen per month as scholarship amount for studying or conducting research in specially designated regions.

Fees for entrance examination, matriculation and tuition at universities are waved.

However, the grantee should bear his or her own expenses, cost related to domestic travel to residence to nearest international airport, airport taxes, usage fees, special taxes necessary for travel, expenses within Japan (including airline transit costs, travel insurance expenses, carryon luggage).
