The Government will soon take a decision on absorbing the 23,000 development officers who have been given teacher appointments to the Sri Lanka Teachers Service.

The Government has consulted the Attorney General’s Department and will take into consideration the advice given by the Department when making a final decision, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said. He said of the 43,000 graduates who were recruited as development officers by the previous government, 23,000 were given teaching appointments.

However there has been an issue in absorbing them into the teacher’s service without them undergoing the mandatory teacher training courses.

The Teacher Service is a closed service and hence we have to ensure that absorbing them directly to the service will not pose a legal issue, he said.

A final decision will be made soon, he added.
