JAPURA Marketing produces fine academia with big hearts
View(s):In order to tell the narrative of a department at the University off Sri Jayewardenepura that is regarded as the best department in the Faculty of Management because of its exceptional work and commitment to the institution, I take the liberty of naming the names and personalities in this article. Over the years, the Marketing Management department of J’PURA has produced a number of top marketers.
The department is backed by a strong alumni association led by Dharshana Jayasinghe and an able team with the support of the head of the department Professor (Mrs.) Sandamali Galdolage, and the senior lecturer Mr. Aminda Lakmal who has dedicated his time and energy to organise many events that created a platform for the undergraduates to shine. The association is backed by many other eminent marketers such as; Mr. Maxwell Ranasinghe (Marketing lecturer and a trainer), Past president of the MAA and the media expert – Lalith Godakanda, Amitha Amarasinghe of APIDM, Oshadee of TIIKM, Manthika, Manoji, Nipuni, Dinali, Dilupa, Seroshi, Chathuranga, Chandra, Nuwan, Vimukthi and Thisaru.
The Department of Marketing Management at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) was established in 1994 as a “marketing unit” under the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC) with the pioneering efforts of emeritus professor (Mr) Pallewaththa, professor (Mr) Neville Warnakulasooriya, Professor (Mrs) Rohini Samarasinghe, Professor (Mr) Lalith Chandrasiri, Professor (Mrs) Amila Jayarathne, Professor (Mrs.) Malkanthi, and many other names to follow.
Within just three decades of establishing the department, they have produced four deans of faculties of management and commerce in the leading four universities in Sri Lanka. From a department’s perspective, this is a remarkable achievement and the four professors were felicitated by the MAA (Marketing Alumni Association) with the participation of their families and faculty members last year. However, because three of the four professors are not affiliated with the same university that created them, their requests resulted in no media coverage of this occasion. Nonetheless, it’s a noteworthy accomplishment of this kind that has to be honoured and disseminated to the community in order to serve as motivation for upcoming generations.
What is more significant about these four people is that they are all equally modest, kind, knowledgeable about their field, and supportive. Whenever possible, they encourage their juniors to have growth opportunities. Since they are promoting marketing and, more importantly, how to be a good human being as a marketer in Sri Lanka, JAPURA marketing should be proud of them.
Due to the modest status of the University of Sri Jaywawrdenepura’s department of marketing management, these four academics—along with countless others—have undoubtedly been helping the marketing community in Sri Lanka, but they have not been mentioned. May the new year brings more opportunities to all the marketers in Sri Lanka to promote more and more brands around the world to strengthen the economy of Sri Lanka.
