University of Colombo Leo Clubc conducts ‘ViEquality’
View(s):On December 29, the Leo Club of the University of Colombo conducted ‘ViEquality’, an initiative aimed to empower women of the estate community by addressing issues such as gender discrimination, labour rights, and mental well-being.
Held at New Chattle Waththa, Galpatha, the event brought together a diverse panel of experts, including OIC of the Horana Women and Child Protection Bureau, WSI Liyanage, attorney-at-law Ayeshmantha Gayan, and psychologist Subodhi Hansani, each offering valuable insights and practical guidance.
WSI Liyanage’s session focused on the critical issues of violence against women, advocating for equal rights and providing tools to address domestic abuse, encouraging women to recognise and act against such injustices.
Mr Gayan educated the participants on labour laws, maternity benefits, and fair wages, empowering the estate workers with the knowledge needed to protect their rights and secure fair treatment in the workplace.
Meanwhile, Ms Hansani emphasised the importance of mental well-being, equipping women with strategies to navigate emotional challenges and rise above personal struggles effectively.
The event also provided a platform for participants to engage with resource persons, share their concerns, and seek personalised advice. This holistic approach helped bridge knowledge gaps while fostering a sense of confidence and empowerment among estate women. (DW)
