31 illegal shops at the Galle Public Market removed
View(s):Thirty-one illegally constructed shops erected near the Galle Public Market were removed last Tuesday (31).
The Galle Municipal Council and the Four Gravets Divisional Secretariat filed a court case in 2020 against 34 shops with illegally erected buildings at the public market.
The shops were removed after the court delivered the judgment for removal on December 10, 2024. The three remaining shops are scheduled to be removed on January 15.
Galle Municipal Commissioner S D Rathnayake said that the 34 illegal constructions had been set up on state property during 2019 where business activities had been carried out.
She added that the owners of the illegal shops had refused to occupy the shop cubicles newly constructed at the old fish market in 2023, claiming that the cubicles lacked space.
Divisional Secretary of Four Gravets Indika Samarakoon said the land where the illegal construction was set up belonged to Galle Municipality and the Four Gravets Divisional Secretariat. As these shop keepers had refused to vacate, they had had to resort to court action. The Deputy Divisional Secretary of the Four Gravets explained that they received the documents issued by the courts regarding the three remaining illegally erected shops later, hence their removal on January 15.
