LTL Transformers Pvt Ltd (LTLT Sri Lanka), a fully owned subsidiary of LTL Holdings Ltd (LTL), has taken steps to establish a transformer manufacturing facility in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania called LTL Transformers Tanzania (Pvt) Ltd (LTLT Tanzania).

This is the first contract executed through LTLT Tanzania, a fully owned subsidiary of LTLT Sri Lanka incorporated in Tanzania, CEO of LTL, Nuhuman Marikkar told The Sunday Times Business.

Tanzania Electric Supply Company Ltd (TANESCO), the main power utility company in Tanzania jointly with REA (Rural Electrification Agency) has floated a tender in December 2023 for Turnkey Constructions of 33kV electrical distribution network which includes distribution transformers among other equipment. These projects are funded by Government of Tanzania through Ministry of Energy and executed jointly by REA and TANESCO. Transformer supply for 3 Lots has been awarded to LTLT Tanzania as the first ever contract executed by the Tanzanian Transformer Manufacturing facility for 375 units of 100kVA distribution transformers, Mr. Marikkar said.

“Most of Africa is generally electrified at 40 to 50 per cent. For the last 10 years, we have been exporting our transformers, switchgears etc. to African countries. Now our corporate plan is to move strategically to that continent where the demand is,” Mr. Marikkar added.

“LTLT Sri Lanka is the only transformer manufacturer in Sri Lanka having annual production capacity of 4000 transformers, ranging from 5kVA to 5000kVA. Further currently research and development works are progressing for 6.8 MVA three winding transformer with a containerized substation targeting the Solar power projects to be taken place in future with the focus on renewable energy,” Mr. Marikkar further said.

He further noted these countries are open for private sector investments with their legal systems etc. and friendlier for foreign investments.
