Former Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, was remanded until January 17 by the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting his 66-year-old neighbour, Sarath Chandrasiri, with a 12-foot plastic pipe. The attack, which resulted in Mr. Chandrasiri requiring five stitches on his face, reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a boundary wall.

According to police, the conflict began on January 6 when Mr. Chandrasiri filed a complaint with the Mirihana Police, accusing Mr. Weeratunga of demolishing a blind wall he had constructed. The dispute was subsequently brought to the attention of the Kotte Municipal Council, and both parties were asked to resolve the matter.

However, Mr. Weeratunga had allegedly resumed tearing down the wall on January 9 to construct a new boundary wall. The situation escalated when Mr. Chandrasiri, acting on advice from his lawyers, began recording Weeratunga’s construction activities from his balcony, police said.

Angered by this, Mr. Weeratunga allegedly threw a stone at Mr. Chandrasiri, missing him, before attacking him with a plastic pipe, police said.

Mr. Chandrasiri was admitted to Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital for treatment.

Mr. Weeratunga was arrested on January 10, and police have charged him with serious bodily harm, assault, and criminal intimidation.
