Animal SOS, where every stray finds a refuge

View(s):

Every day, countless animals suffer in silence – abandoned, abused and forgotten. While most turn away, some choose to respond with fierce compassion and unrelenting action.

Animal SOS Sri Lanka, a UK-registered charity, was founded by Kim Cooling with one simple yet powerful mission: to alleviate the suffering of stray animals and give them a second chance at life. This organization’s journey began from a deep sense of compassion, after Ms. Cooling witnessed the conditions faced by stray animals in the country.

“The plight of stray animals in Sri Lanka is dire,” she reflects. “Seeing their suffering firsthand, I knew I couldn’t walk away.”

They care: The Animal SOS team with some of their rescuees

What started as a vision to rescue and rehabilitate animals quickly grew into a comprehensive sanctuary and rescue centre, aimed at offering them not only  a chance to survive but a chance to thrive.  Animal SOS Sri Lanka’s work spans a broad spectrum of services designed to meet the needs of stray animals in distress. At its core is the rescue and rehabilitation of injured, abandoned and abused animals. With a sanctuary housing over 2,600 dogs and numerous cats at Ahangama, including over 500 disabled animals who receive specialised care, Animal SOS Sri Lanka has become a lifeline for those who might otherwise face a cruel fate.

“Our motto is rooted in compassion and respect for life – we never euthanize any animals because we believe that every creature deserves the freedom to live and thrive,” says Ms. Cooling.

The sanctuary offers more than just shelter; it provides a safe space for healing, a free-roaming haven where the animals can recover, and rediscover their will to live.

In addition to the sanctuary, the organisation runs vital spay/neuter programmes aimed at controlling the stray animal population and reducing the spread of diseases like rabies. Educational initiatives like “Love and Kindness to Animals” reach local schools and communities to spread the message of compassion and responsible pet care.

Animal SOS Sri Lanka has also embraced the TikTok platform, to spread its message and create a network of supporters. “We use TikTok to showcase the transformation of rescued animals, highlight their resilience, and appeal for urgent donations or medical supplies during emergencies,” explains Ms. Cooling.

One of the most powerful aspects of Animal SOS Sri Lanka’s TikTok presence is the “before and after” stories of animals that have been given a second chance. Videos documenting an animal’s recovery from severe neglect or injury have gone viral, inspiring viewers to take action, encouraging donations, sponsorships and even adoptions.

Behind-the-scenes content showing the dedication of the staff and volunteers also plays a crucial role in building a sense of community among supporters.

The impact of Animal SOS Sri Lanka can be seen in the thousands of lives it has transformed. One success story is of the dog Lucky, who arrived at the sanctuary, paralysed after a road accident. Despite his grim condition, the dedicated team at Animal SOS Sri Lanka gave him a second chance. After extensive rehabilitation, Lucky has now become an ambassador for the sanctuary.

“Stories like Lucky’s inspire others to see the value in giving animals another chance,” says Ms. Cooling.

Through its spay/neuter and rabies vaccination campaigns, Animal SOS Sri Lanka has helped reduce the stray animal population, improving public health in the communities it serves. The positive effects are clear, but the organisation’s need for support remains as pressing as ever.

Animal SOS Sri Lanka relies entirely on donations to fund its operations. As the number of animals in need continues to grow, so does the demand for resources.

“As a charity that relies solely on donations, we are currently struggling with funding to meet the growing needs of the animals in our care,” admits Ms. Cooling. “We urgently need support from compassionate individuals and organizations to sustain and expand our work.”

Support can come in many forms. Whether it’s making a financial donation, sponsoring an individual animal, or volunteering time and skills, every contribution makes a difference. Animal SOS Sri Lanka also invites animal lovers to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or other milestones by sponsoring activities for the animals in its care.

For those unable to provide financial support, spreading the word through social media or becoming an advocate for the cause can also play a critical role in raising awareness and inspiring others to get involved.

“Every animal has a story, and every story deserves a better ending,” says Ms. Cooling.
