Havies thump Sri Lions in dull game
Former skipper and hooker Azmir Fajudeen braced a hat-trick of tries as Havelocks SC thumped a hapless Sri Lions by 43-13 in a dull SLR-MasterCard Club Rugby League fifth week encounter played at Havelock Park yesterday.
Securing their bonus points well within the first half of the game, Havelocks scored from seven tries and four conversions, while leading the halfway mark by a commanding 31-3. Sri Lions, despite having big names and seasoned talent in their camp, were inept mostly, even forcing their opponents from committing comedic errors, and scored from two unconverted tries and a penalty.
Havies opened scoring from a try from centre Sudesh Jayawickrama in the seventh minute, which was converted by his sibling and flyhalf Sandesh to lead 7-0. Sri Lions responded with a penalty from skipper and fullback Kevin Dixon, giving their solitary three points through the remainder of the session, as they trailed 3-7.
Havelocks added two unconverted tries from winger Jayathu Rajaratne in the 15th minute and prop Shehan Silva in the 24th minute, as they sailed on to gain a 17-3 lead. Hooker Fajudeen’s two tries that came in the 29th and 40th minutes, with successful conversions Sandesh Jayawickrama pushed their lead to 31-3 at halftime.
Following the resumption Sri Lions made a brief onslaught culminating with hooker Prasad Madushanka bracing an unconverted try in the 48th minute, still to trail by a thick 8-31. Fajudeen scored his hat-trick in the 53rd minute as Havies expanded their lead to 38-6 following a failed conversion.
Sri Lions responded with yet another brief onslaught resulting Madushanka to brace his and the team’s second try in the 60th minute, after Havies made swift substitutions. Winger Harusha Perera landed a try in the 71st minute to give fullback Samuel Maduwantha an easy conversion as Havies secured their fourth win of the season by 43-13 against Sri Lions.
