RPCs want state plantations to show the way
Plantation company (RPC) owners have stated that if the authorities want to implement a monthly salary for estate workers they should then begin the system first with the state plantations and then establish a model to understand the feasibility of such a proposal.
Planters Association Spokesman Dr. Roshan Rajadurai queried as to how to pay monthly wages and noted that this was not discussed with them.
He pointed out that such a proposal can first be started on the state plantations and if it is feasible then it could be considered by the Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs). Currently there are 2.3 million agriculture workers in the country and it was queried how paddy farmers will also be given a monthly salary.
Dr. Rajadurai noted that this proposal is “completely impractical” and asked how this could be paid as the work if determined based on the amount of tea plucked.
Tea estate workers are today obtaining the highest pay in the wages board as the tea and rubber sectors are given the highest wages, it was noted.
He also queried as to how such a monthly salary could be paid by the smallholders owning small plots of tea lands that reap the majority of the production. Tea prices have declined lately and this has affected the estate revenue as well.
