A short-term certificate course on Japan’s modernization studies which was hosted for the fourth consecutive year by the Sri Lanka Japan Study Center at the University of Peradeniya concluded this week.

The closing ceremony of the JICA Chair Programme was held on January 15 at the Oak Regency Kandy, which was attended by Deputy Head of Mission of Japan in Sri Lanka Nioaki Kamoshida, Senior Representative of JICA Yuri Ide, Vice Chancellor of Peradeniya Prof Terrence Madujith, JAICA Sri Lanka Representative Yukiki Ito, deans of faculties, directors of centers and units, management committee members of the Sri Lanka Japan Study Center, guests and JICA Chair participants.

The event was a closing and award ceremony of those who completed the programme and the essay contest winners.

The JAICA Chair Certificate programme is offered and fully sponsored by JICA. The details of the course and the event were conveyed by Dr Poornika Seelegama, Director of the Sri Lanka Japan Study Center of the University of Peradeniya.

Dr Seelegama said the JAICA Chair Programme for the year 2024 started in October 2024 and was a certificate programme on Japan’s rapid development.

“The course is very important because Japan had to start from scrap after World War II. Their path was rocky and they too had to fight against inefficiency, pollution and many other challenges. Yet in a few years Japan achieved incredible standards. Their main ingredient was changing people’s attitudes to guide behaviour. The course would thus provide the Sri Lankan students Japanese secrets for modernisation.”

She highlighted that out of the approximately 450 students who had enrolled for the course about 75 had received the certificate of competition for the programme by attending the course in person.

The course involved a series of video presentations by eminent Japanese university professors. At each session, video presentations would be complemented by a talk by a resource person who is a senior Lankan professor currently in Japan.

After the resource person speaks for about 40 minutes to 1 hour, through zoom, a moderator would be invited to synthesize the information and provide an analysis where comparison between Sri Lanka and the topic of the day may also be made.

The moderator would usually be a lecturer from the Peradeniya University who had completed their postgraduate studies in Japan. The floor would then be opened for questions from students attending the lecture.

Dr Seelegama said the purpose of the Sri Lanka Japan Study Center was to support Lankan Japanese academic collaboration. The types of collaboration that took place indlude a research congresses, study visits and field visits by Japanese undergraduate and postgraduate students to Sri Lanka, signing of academic agreements between the University of Peradeniya and Japanese universities.
