Indian grant for smart classrooms in plantation schools
View(s):The Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure has signed an agreement with India to establish of 60 smart classrooms in selected plantation schools.
According to the memorandum of understanding, the Indian Government will provide grant assistance of 500 million rupees.
The MoU was signed and exchanged by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure secretary, B K Prabhath Chandrakeerthi on Thursday (16).
The project is set to establish 60 smart classrooms for 48 plantation schools in Nuwara Eliya and 6 schools each in Kandy and Badulla Districts. The initiative would bring learning benefits to students, and promote information and communications technology integration of the schools.
The Indian High Commission said the project is another initiative in line with past and ongoing Indian development partnership projects in Sri Lanka in the education sector.
Diplomatic letters were exchanged by the governments of the two countries recently for doubling Indian grant support for a project to upgrade 9 plantation schools.
A three-month teacher-training programme in STEM subjects for plantation schools was also conducted under the multi-sectoral grant assistance of INR 750 million announced last year to mark 200 years since the arrival of the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka. (KW)
