The Sri Lanka Japan Collaboration Research Conference (SJCRC) was held last month at the University of Peradeniya Faculty of Agriculture.

The conference was attended by the vice chancellor, deputy vice chancellor, the deans of all the faculties and the officials of the SJCRC and the Sri Lanka Japanese Study Center (SJSC).

“The conference saw the selection of approximately 20 abstracts after a rigorous selection process. The event saw five sessions condensed into three,” Dr Poornika Seelegama said.

The three sessions involved human and social sciences as the first session, animal science and agriculture as the second session and science and technology as the third session.

The research congress had five teams where each team comprised both a Lankan and Japanese author. If the authors presented on an individual basis, the Lankan author had to present about Japan while the Japanese author had to present about Sri Lanka.

The keynote speaker was Emeritus Professor Dr Kazuo Ogata. He spoke on agriculture in Sri Lanka.

Emeritus Professor Piyadasa Ratnayaka of the University of Saga, Japan, gave his perspective on Lankan agriculture pointing out that Sri Lanka needed an attitude adjustment if it wanted to see development.

He pointed out that the provision of knowledge, facts and skills alone are insufficient for the development of human capital and what was needed was attitude development as well.

He highlighted that Lankan students had lot of knowledge but lacked the proper attitudes.

Dr Seelegama said all abstracts selected and presented will be published, and all those who participated in the conference would receive a certificate of attendance.
