Ladies’ cagers clinch U-17 Division ‘C’ title
View(s):Ladies’ College emerged champions of the All-Island Under-17 Division ‘C’ Girls’ Basketball Championship 2024, concluded last weekend at the Olympus Indoor Courts in Malabe. With an unbeaten run throughout the competition, the victorious cager team showcased their determination, skills and teamwork into action, as they made their school proud at a juncture when Ladies’ College celebrate its 125th anniversary.

Led by Maria Marikar, the Ladies’ College cager team went on a rampage during their group stage games, totally dominating St. Mary’s College, Matugama by 59-8 and Dharmapala MV, Pannipitiya by 54-2 to reach the knockout stage. In the quarter-finals Ladies’ annihilated Ethos International School by 63-6 to faceoff Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya, Galle and overcome them by 53-25 to reach the final. The closest rivalry the Ladies’ cagers received throughout the tournament was against their opponents in the final, Lyceum International School, Panadura, who they defeated by 41-32 to emerge Division ‘C’ cager champions.
Under Maria Karikar’s captaincy, the victorious team included Soraya Gunawardena, Thara Thennakoon, Kyla Wilson, Nehaara de Mel, Nehlah Gazzali, Kaymini Ubaysiri, Sanulya Dharmadasa, Minnelle de Fonseka and Kaushalya Vithanage. The team was coached by Sameera Senarath, who was assisted by Indika Lakshan, with the able backing of the Principal Deepika Dassanayake, Sports Consultant Dilrukshi Samaranayake and Sports Coordinator Sandeepa Wijayanthi.
