Yuhansa, a tennis star in the making
View(s):Yuhansa Peiris, a 14-year-old tennis sensation from Bishop’s College, is making an impact in Sri Lanka’s tennis arena with an extraordinary run of victories in 2024. Yuhansa’s performances have been outstanding across top tournaments this year.
She won the Under-14 Singles title at the SSC Championship and was runner-up in the Under-16 category. At the Colombo Championship, she clinched the Under-16 Singles title, cementing her reputation as a player to watch.
Her dominance extended to the Super Series tournaments. At the Sri Lanka Nationals, she swept both the Under-14 and Under-16 Singles titles. She then excelled at the Grade 1 SLTA-YETI Hard Court Nationals, winning both the Under-16 and Under-18 Singles titles, defeating older and more experienced players in the last event of the year.
Earlier in November last year, she reached another milestone as Yuhansa triumphed at the ATF Under-16 Tournament held in Colombo, an achievement that positioned her as a potential international star.
Behind Yuhansa’s success are her dedicated coaches Niranjan Cassie Chetty, a respected trainer, who has guided her technical and mental development. Fitness coach Jaliya Yasarathne has ensured she is physically prepared to compete at the highest level. Their combined efforts have been pivotal to her rapid rise.
In 2025, Yuhansa is set to join Sri Lanka’s Billie Jean Junior Team, having won all her trial matches. She is also preparing to compete in women’s categories for the first time, marking another significant step in her career. Bishop’s College has been instrumental in her journey, with continuous support from Principal Chemali Herath and her teachers, enabling Yuhansa to balance academics and sports.
