School shoes and meals for students to continue
View(s):The cabinet approved two separate proposals that benefit disadvantaged school children this week.
One proposal was to provide school shoes to selected school children, student monks and lay students of selected piriven, and seela matha, this year. The other was to provide food for school children.
The Education Ministry has provided shoes for selected students since 2015. It was extended to student monks and lay students of selected piriven and seela matha from 2020 to 2023.
The cabinet of ministers approved the proposal to provide a gift voucher worth Rs 3,000 to the selected candidates to purchase a pair of shoes based on the recommendation of a committee.
The programme will be implemented for 650,000 students studying in 6,000 schools with less than 250 students, for 140,000 students in estate schools across the island that do not belong to the category of schools with less than 250 students , for 2,300 students in 28 schools where students with special needs, and for 30,000 selected student monks and lay students.
The Government Nutrition Programme will provide food for school children in 2025.
The cabinet noted that at present the school food programme is being implemented in 8,956 schools belonging to the 100 education zones, covering an overall 1.4 million students, including students in Grades 1-5 in all public schools, all students in schools with less than 100 students, students in special education in special units or schools, and lay students in selected piriven.
The cabinet approved the proposal to make budget allocations to provide meals to a maximum of 1.5 million students.
