The Colombo Municipal Council is carrying out a probe on the multiple deaths of ducks in Beira Lake, on Navam Mawatha.
CMC Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr. M. Ijas said that claims that the ducks had died from a substance added to the Beira by the CMC cannot be confirmed until postmortem investigations are concluded.
He said that the CMC had added an organic bacteria into the lake to break down the pollutants of the lake, which emitted a foul smell. He said the same bacteria had been introduced in earlier instances as well.
Dr. Ijas said that the Homagama veterinary investigation centre of animal production and health led by Dr. S.K. Samanthi Rathnasiri was providing technical expertise to the CMC to carry out the investigation. He said water samples and the dead birds’ carcasses have been sent for postmortem inquiries. Some samples have been sent to the veterinary research institute of Peradeniya too, he said.
The veterinary surgeon said that according to initial reports from the Homagama veterinary investigation centre, avian flu had been ruled out as the cause of death.
A separate investigation is also being carried out by The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA).
