Due to the ongoing work on the Wayamba canal project to carry water from the Wemadilla reservoir in Matale to Wayamba, villagers in the Pahala Bambawa in Galewala are facing immense hardships.

Even though the Mahaweli Authority constructed a temporary road for the villagers to travel since the work on the project began four years ago, the road has fallen into disrepair and pedestrians and vehicles find it difficult to travel along this road.

Villagers in the area say that due to this around 40 families who live the area undergo immense hardships on a daily basis with schoolchildren among those inconvenienced.

A hard trek: daily life is challenging due to dire road conditions

They said that their homes too have been impacted by the ongoing project with cracks on walls as well as sinking due to the strain from the construction work.

Some of the villagers are forced to hire three wheelers to overcome the hardships on the depleted pathways but they are forced to pay as much as Rs.600 though the distance they travel to get to a school or their fields is less than a kilometre.

They said that the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne is aware of the problem and hoped he would step in to assist them.
