Steady rise in tourist arrivals: 175,000 in the first three weeks of Jan

More than 175,000 tourist arrivals have been recorded in the first three weeks of this month showing a steady increase.

The highest number of tourist arrivals were from India, 30,000, amounting to about 17 per cent of the total arrivals while the second highest number was from Russia. 25,000, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

During the three weeks 15,000 tourists arrived from the UK and 10,000 from Germany marking the next highest tourist arrivals.

Last year in January 208,253 tourist arrivals were recorded while in 2018 which was considered as one of the best years for tourism in recent times, 238,924 tourists arrivals were recorded.

Last year two million tourists arrived in the country which was the best after 2018 when 2.3 million tourist arrivals were recorded. The 2018 figure was the highest  in I3 years.
