SL coming up with payment solutions for digital nomads
Sri Lanka is targeting to introduce a series of digital payment solutions for digital nomads, a top official said.
This came after the country slipped last year in the Best Place for Digital Nomad’s List from being the best paradise for digital nomads three years ago. Club Med ranked Sri Lanka as the second-best country for digital nomads in 2022, with over 50,000 residing on the island. As a city, Colombo ranks fourth, with a 30 million digital nomad population.
The Wi-Fi, 5G, fuel, and public transport along with a separate Visa category with a 6-month stay and extendable up to two years with an allowance to open a bank account were some of the reasons that Sri Lanka has slipped in its placing.
In this respect the official acknowledged that digital nomads should have a separate visa category. He added that the government is trying to secure a cost effective way for digital nomads to transact in the country. “The ICTA is in discussion with banks and fintech companies as well as global payment solution providers are looking at solutions for digital nomads on their own,” he said.
He noted the importance of the government recognising digital nomad visas as a way of allowing remote workers to live and work in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka now allows digital nomads and foreign nationals to apply for a 30-day ETA instead of an official visa, attracting digital nomads for economic growth and talent diversification.
