Career guidance teachers for schools
View(s):The Education Ministry has decided to appoint counsellors and career guidance teachers for all schools, in a bid to assist students in choosing a suitable career path, Education Deputy Minister Madura Seneviratne said.
A teacher will be assigned to each school, with students from Grade 6 onwards being given counselling and career guidance, he said.
“Research among students in our schools has shown that most students in the Ordinary Level and Advanced Level classes are confused about their career paths and what subjects to choose.
If we start counselling them from early on they will be able to focus on their future paths,” he said.
Some students are pressured into a career they don’t want to engage in by parents and peers, he said.
“For example there are students who have been forced to do science subjects, but are interested in the arts. So we have to ensure that students get the right direction from the teachers,” Mr Seneviratne said.
Parents too would receive counselling on this so that they can break free from societal pressure that force children to choose only selected careers, whereas their real talents may be in other fields, he said. (DWI)
