Govt. to make “constructive changes” to proposed educational reforms
View(s):The Government hopes to implement the proposed educational reforms submitted by the previous government after making “constructive changes” to those reforms. Accordingly, educational reforms that are more suited to the student population will be introduced with the aim of making a “transformative change” in the country’s education system, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament.
Responding to a question raised by National People’s Power MP Ravindra Bandara recently, Dr Amarasuriya added that the government will review the educational reforms of the previous government and introduce its own long-term educational reforms by 2026.
She added that the government has no intention of removing subjects such as aesthetics, information technology and accounting. Instead, the government will only make suitable amendments to the contents of these subjects. “It is our observation that these subjects must remain in the curriculum,” she said.
The government’s objective to affect a transformative change in the country’s educational sector will be done primarily through three sectors – teacher training, reducing the gap between schools through better organisation and developing infrastructure facilities, and focusing attention on the contents of the subjects.
The government’s ultimate aim is to move away from an exam-centric education system to one that is more practical and will not put undue pressure on children, she said. -SJ
