The inaugural session of the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya student parliament was held at Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in attendance.

Addressing the inaugural sessions, the premier, who is also the Minister of Education, said that future political leaders should begin to contribute to the country’s development during their school days.

She said there has been reluctance among the current young generation to enter into politics, and invited them to join in governance.

The students had the opportunity to ask the Prime Minister questions.

General Secretary of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera said the presence of the students in the Parliament was a good message for the students. She also made a brief introduction on the system of the Parliament, and pointed out that the students are being given a valuable opportunity to improve their academic qualities.

Senior Additional Secretary K M N H E N Kumarasinghe, who was present on the occasion, made a keynote speech on the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme, and elaborated on the responsibility of children in creating a clean country.

Director of Parliament Jayalath Perera said that programmes like this play an important role in developing the personality and character traits of students, making them independent and responsible citizens.

School Principle Sumedha Jayweera said it was a valuable opportunity for children to have this experience in a historical place.

Afterward the school’s student council held a debate on the theme “Responsibility of Citizens to Build a Sustainable
Sri Lanka”.

Certificates of appreciation were presented to the students who attended the event by the Prime Minister and other dignitaries. This programme was held as a part of the student outreach programme organised by the Sri Lanka Parliament and the President’s Office.
