Chief Justice Murdu Fernando has forwarded the names of four senior high court judges to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to fill four existing vacancies in the Court of Appeal.
Accordingly, the names of Kandy High Court Judge Sumudu Premachandra, Colombo High Court Judge K. Priyantha Fernando, Trincomalee High Court Judge Prema Shankar and Colombo Civil High Court Judge Frank Gunawardena have been forwarded to the President.
Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe, meanwhile, has forwarded the names of Senior Deputy Solicitors General Lakmali Karunanayake and Sudarshana de Silva on behalf of the AG’s Department to fill the vacancies.
The President will pick those from among these nominees that he believes are suitable to serve on the Court of Appeal and forward them to the Constitutional Council (CC) for approval. The CC is set to convene next on February 5.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Times learns that the Court of Appeal president, Nissanka Bandula Karunarathna, has gone on pre-retirement leave with effect from January 31. Justice Karunarathna had organised a function on Friday to thank his staff prior to going on leave.
Given this situation, an acting president is to be appointed soon to the Court of Appeal.
