Belinda Hunt, great-granddaughter of William Henry Gregory, Governor of Sri Lanka from 1872 to 1877, recently visited the country with her husband, Miles Hunt. The couple, who reside in England, explored Nuwara Eliya, a town deeply connected to her ancestor’s legacy.
Governor Gregory significantly contributed to Sri Lanka’s development, investing 1200 pounds in beautifying Nuwara Eliya. Belinda paid tribute to his work by visiting Gregory Lake, the old Queen’s House, and the current Nuwara Eliya Presidential Palace, Queen’s Cottage during British rule.
She noted that her great-grandfather sold his house for 1500 pounds, and the present-day building was completed in 1883 under Governor Sir Arthur Havelock.
During their trip, the couple visited the Holy Trinity Church and the museum in Victoria Park. They also attended the opening of the Shantipura Viewing Center on January 26, graced by Minister of Tourism Vijitha Herath and supported by the Sri Lanka Air Force.
Governor Gregory’s contributions extended beyond Nuwara Eliya; he played a key role in establishing the Colombo National Museum, restoring ancient Buddhist sites in Anuradhapura, and reviving the country’s irrigation industry.
Former mayor Mahinda Dodampegamage met with Belinda and Miles to discuss the future development of Nuwara Eliya as a premier tourist destination, aiming to preserve ‘Little England’s’ charm while enhancing its global appeal.
