Govt. finalises names for top diplomatic posts
View(s):The government is finalising a list of names to be posted as heads of Sri Lanka’s missions abroad, with ex-Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya assuming duties as Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
He replaces Mohan Pieiris, also an ex-chief justice, who was recalled along with other political appointees in November last year.
Yasoja Gunasekara, currently the most senior member of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, is likely to take over as High Commissioner in Canberra, while Mahishini Colonne—who was Deputy High Commissioner to India from 2011 to 2014—is expected to be named as High Commissioner in New Delhi. Both are experienced career officers.
It is likely, however, that many of Sri Lanka’s embassies abroad are to be filled with non-career (political) appointees. Among them is Prof. Janak Kumarasinghe, an academic from the University of Sri Jayewardenenpura. Recently retired Sri Lanka Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshall Udeni Rajapaksa is also due to get a posting. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said the names were being finalised.
Last year, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s administration recalled 16 politically appointed heads of mission. Minister Herath said at the time that replacements would be made from the Foreign Service as well as from other professions, according to requirements in the respective regions.
