LC Classics 125, presented on Sunday, February 16 at the Ladies’ College hall, is a rare performance by generations of old girls who have come together to celebrate 125 years of the school, some having travelled from overseas to be a part of the show.

The concert features numerous reputed musicians, well known to the public in Sri Lanka, performing much loved music, classical, semi classical as well as from musicals, in a programme of diverse instrumental and vocal music.

The concert programme will include a two piano performance of Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche, an ebullient mix of Brazilian and French music, presented by well-known pianists Ramya de Livera Perera and Dhilanthi Fernando.  These two pianists will also perform a Slavonic dance by Dvorak, for four hands on the piano.

UK based soprano, Preshanthi Navaratnam, recipient of a British Empire medal for her services to the charitable and voluntary sector in the UK, will sing one of Mozart’s most recognizable arias ‘Porgi Amor’. She will combine with Peshali Yapa, who has performed as a soloist in Europe and Sri Lanka, to sing Offenbach’s much loved Barcarolle.

Sri Lanka’s leading cellist Dushyanthi Perera, current Resident conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, will perform a feisty Spanish piece ‘Requibros’, accompanied by pianist Ramya de Livera Perera, before joining principal cellist of the SOSL, Tamara Holsinger, to perform the toe-tapping ‘Jamaican Rumba’ by Arthur Benjamin and Elgar’s poignant ‘Salut D’Amor’.

Flautist Sureka Amerasinghe, known for her multiple musical activities, combines with Anusha Attygalle, accompanied by Ruvini Gunasekera, to perform Delibes’ beautiful ‘Flower Duet’ and Doppler’s delightful Rigoletto Fantasy, for Two Flutes.

LC Classics 125 will also feature two compositions by Natasha Senanayake, who performs her own music on the piano as accompaniment to singer Devashrie de Silva.  Melanie Bibile, better known for her jazz singing, will entertain the audience with a rendition of ‘Cabaret’, accompanied by pianist Sureka Amerasinghe. Similarly, Choir Director of LC, Anushka Abhayaratne will sing an arrangement by Sureka Amerasinghe of  ‘I Believe’, showcasing the latter’s multiple musical talents.

‘Baby Grimmalow’s First Dancing Lesson’, a composition by Australian based Ismene Chitty, also an alumae of Ladies’ College, will be brought to Sri Lankan audiences by US based pianist, Dhilanthi Fernando.

Bringing a touch of the musicals, Lydia Goonetilleke Jayamanne and Sureka Amerasinghe will perform a medley from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Phantom of the Opera’ while  Dinushka Jayawickreme, will perform ‘Wishing you were Somehow Here Again’, accompanied by pianist Ramya de Livera Perera and violinist Lydia Goonetilleke Jayamanne. She will also sing ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’.

Ladies’ College has always maintained a high standard of drama, singing and music and produced many accomplished actors, singers and musicians.  LC Classics 125 will feature many of these performers, some who are professional musicians and have performed around the world, while others combine their passion for music while pursuing their careers.
