District Court issues enjoining order preventing AGM of SLR
The Colombo District Judge Sadun Vithanage has issued an enjoining order preventing the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) from taking place on January 21, following a legal challenge by Lasitha Gunarathne. When the matter was taken up again on January 30, attorneys representing the Election Committee informed the court that the Sports Minister had indefinitely postponed the AGM, rendering the case academic.
However, President’s Counsel Kuvera de Zoysa, appearing for Gunarathne, countered this argument, asserting that his client instituted these proceedings on a different premise. He clarified that Gunarathne was contesting the wrongful rejection of his nomination paper rather than seeking to postpone the election. He further submitted that if the Election Committee were willing to accept Gunarathne’s nomination, his client would reconsider the future of the case
Kuvera de Zoysa PC appeared with his legal team, including Pasindu Bandara and Sajana de Zoysa, on the instructions of Sanjay Fonseka. The case is set to continue as legal arguments unfold regarding the legitimacy of the nomination process
