St. Thomas’ record 10-wicket win
St. Thomas’ College, Matara defeated St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa by 10 wickets in a low-scoring Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at Matara yesterday. Electing to bat, St. Joseph Vaz were skittled out for 103 runs with Isuru Jayasekara top scoring 32 after facing 82 deliveries and hitting four boundaries. Pesandu Sanjan and Punal Pamuditha were the destroyers as both accounted for seven wickets, with Loshitha Diksith picking up two scalps.
In reply, the hosts posted 190 runs with Thathsara Dewmith and Pesandu Sanjan hittng contrasting knocks of 47, and Senura Gihan chipping in with 31 runs. Denuwan Perera picked four wickets while Demian Prasanna and Mathisan Fernando claimed two wickets each.
Batting for the second time with a deficit of 87 runs to erase, St. Joseph Vaz were bowled out for 135 runs despite a valiant knock of 50 off 140 deliveries from low-order batsman Savio Fernando. Vihanga Sankalana, Senura Gihan and Manuga Guruge picked two wickets each, as St. Thomas’ were left to chase a simple target of 49 runs for a victory, which they achieved without losing any wickets.
Zahira College opening batsman Ranidu Malith slammed a quick-fire knock of 213 off 150 balls, inclusive of 15 boundaries and 19 towering sixes, to help his side amass a formidable score of 318 for 9 declared in reply to 110 runs posted by St. John’s College, Panadura at Maradana. The matches will continue today.
