Clean Peradeniya to kick off on February 15

The University of Peradeniya will launch the Clean Pera programme on at 8.30 am on February 15 where the university environment would be cleaned, Dr Thilak Subasingha of the university’s Faculty of Management Department of Business Finance said.

The Developing Country for Children organisation helped design the programme, while the 86-87 Alumni Association will help coordinate and organise the programme.

“We believe that our current students will be the future leaders of the nation and when the university is clean they will have a clean mindset that will lead to better innovation and overall development of the country. The Clean Pera programme would run in parallel with the Clean Sri Lanka programme and be actually a model for Clean Sri Lanka,” he said.

He added that several public bodies such as Police, post office, Kandy Municipal Council, pradeshiya sabha and banks will support the programme. The university would ask them to provide gloves, bags and food as refreshments, he said. Some, like the Police, will participate directly.

The Police will also ensure traffic discipline.

Dr Subasingha said that back in the 1980s the academic staff, non- academic staff and student populations all had good relationships with each other. The intention of Clean Pera is to restore the good relations between these communities by inviting each of them to the event.

He explained that the first of the teams involved in the programme would be clearing from Galaha Junction to Uda Peradeniya. Other teams would clean from Galaha Junction to Kandy Road Dangolla Junction, Galaha Junction to Uda Peradeniya and finally from Galaha Junction to Ramalen Hospital.

The different types of garbage would be collected in three differently coloured types of bags. One bag would be provided for glass bottles, while two other bags will be for plastic bottles and bottles from other materials.

There would be a separate system for food refuse where it would be collected by the university’s farm to be consumed by pigs.
