The University of Vavuniya will have a career guidance event in August, according to Prof Yogarajah Nanthagopan.

As part of the programme, an MoU has been signed between the university and the Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka.

“This year in August we will be having the annual career guidance event where professional bodies will provide seminars to Vavuniya University students and high school students from the Vavuniya region,” Prof Nanthagopan said.

He added that the career guidance event will be organised with the support of many professional organisations including one that the university signed an MoU with in September last year, which is valid for three years.

The career guidance event will have a series of lectures on how students can target different career paths, and the careers available in different disciplines.

The event will focus on management including HR, marketing, project management and accounting.

Prof Nanthagopan said the MoU with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants would cover agreements on student exchange, research conferences and supporting student clubs, especially community outreach programmes.

In terms of student exchange, Vavuniya students of accountancy and finance degree subjects would have exemptions from the Chartered Accountants after they study the curriculum of the university. Checking the curriculum would tell how many of the subjects would be under exemption.

Prof Nanthagopan also highlighted that the MoU would provide support in research conferences where partial funding would be given, as well the provision of panel speakers, where seven professional organisations have spoken on innovative practices in their discipline.

The professional bodies would provide lectures and research material for these conferences, and material of the undergraduate and postgraduate students would be published.

Student activities on campus for items like student drawing and photography competition, raffle draws and food festivals were supported, Prof Nanthagopan explained.

In terms of community outreach, the professional organisations are planning to have regional study centres. The professional bodies hope to begin the study centres in Vauniya in July but currently they are doing a market study of the topic.

The community outreach, however, would not only cover Vavuniya but also the region and the country.
