NFC honours American film legend David Lynch

Honouring one of the greatest filmmakers in the recent Hollywood cinema, American director David Lynch, the National Film Corporation (NFC) recently organised a film festival and a master class to a packed audience of David Lynch fans. A concept by NFC newly appointed Chairman, filmmaker and cinema academic Sudath Mahaadivulwewa, the event was organised in remembrance of Lynch who died on January 15, 2025.
Hundreds of film lovers, enthusiasts, cinema students and specially those who love American and Lynchian cinema came to witness the film festival which screened David Lynch’s iconic films ‘Lost Highway’ (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001) and Inland Empire (2006). Often named as a visionary, Lynch’s cinema had the identity of its surrealist and experimental features. Winner of multiple awards Lynch has received Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2006 and honourary Academy Award in 2019.

With a tagline ‘If you are interested in world cinema, David Lynch is a name you cannot avoid…’, the Retrospective Film Festival and the Master Class was attended in numbers on January 30 and 31 at the NFC theatre.
A group of resource persons-filmmakers, academic and critics including Vimukthi Jayasundara, Boodee Keerthisena, Chinthana Dharmadasa, Bopathi Nalin and Vidarshana Kannangara talked in detailed on various perspectives of Lynch’s cinema. Boodee described on ‘inspiration’ in David Lynch’s cinema while Boopathi talked on special aesthetics and architecture of great filmmaker. Use of ‘sexuality’, one of the prominent themes of Lynch was analysed by Chinthana Dharmadasa while Vimukthi Jayasundara talked on transcendental quality of cinema.
