Auctioned Indian trawler, equipment fetch Rs. 2mn
View(s):An Indian bottom trawler and fishing equipment seized from Indian fishermen engaging in illegal bottom trawling in Sri Lankan territorial waters were sold for Rs 2 million at a public auction held at the Point Pedro Magistrate Court premises yesterday.
On December 29, 2022, four Indian fishermen were taken into naval custody along with fishing equipment for engaging in bottom trawling near Valvettithurai. The fishermen were released after legal proceedings were concluded. They were repatriated with the intervention of the Indian High Commission while their fishing equipment and trawler were seized under the amended act.
Accordingly, the trawler, fishing nets, two Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, external cooler, and the anchor were sold for Rs 2,042,350.
