Beach cleaning under ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ begins today at Crow Island
View(s):The Government initiated the first phase of the “Sundara weralak – Akarshaniya sancharaka gamananthayak” programme under its Clean Sri Lanka campaign today at Crow Island, Mattakkuliya under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
Marine Environment Protection Authority Director General Jagath Gunasekara explained that parallel to the main event at Crow Island, a coast cleaning programme would be held in 200 beach areas in the Western and Southern Provinces.
The programme will be held from 8 am to 11.30 am with the participation of state institutes, private sector, non-governmental organisations, residents, and political leaders, he said.
The move also aims for the sustainable development of tourism and fishing industries.
The second phase of the programme is scheduled to be carried out on Sunday, February 16 in the Eastern Province districts of Ampara, Trincomalee and Batticaloa.
On Sunday, February 23, they will carry out the programme in Puttalam and northern districts.
Over 35,000 people are expected to take part in the programme, he added, and 500 coastal areas are scheduled to be covered by it.
