Hanthana Estate officials and contractor remanded over felled trees

The Kandy Additional Magistrate has remanded the superintendent of Hanthana Estate of Udawela Division Sudesh Perera, a field officer and a contractor for the alleged illegal felling of trees in the Hanthana range, which belongs to the JEDB, until February 14 when they will be produced at Kandy Courts.
JEDB lodged the complaint at Thalathuoya Police when investigations began. Later the complaint was diverted to the Kandy Police Special Crimes Branch,which is now handling the investigations.
The case was taken up by the Hanthana Environmental Protection Organisation Attorney Supun Ratnayake who submitted to court that the the organisation is seeking to intervene in his case. He set out that they had violated the provisions of the Hanthana Management Committee agreement and that the Organisation needs to intervene.
The attorney appearing for the suspects objected that they have no status to appear in this court on this complaint made by the JEDB to the Police, but they could complain to the Police. The submission were filed in court.
The allegation is that the JEDB had been entrusted by an agreement to remove dead trees from the Hanthana range under them. But after the agreement period was over the contractors felled the dead and live trees causing damage to the Hanthana range at Udawela Division. The organisation claims it is a massacre of the Hanthana range.
Senior attorney Nanda Senanayake, attorney Priyantha Perera appeared for the suspects.
Attorney Supun Ratnayake appeared for the organisation who wanted to intervene in this investigation.
