Local council polls further delayed
The local council elections can be held only after the April National New Year, Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Rathnayake said yesterday.
He said this was because the Local Authorities Elections (Special Provisions) Bill was expected to be passed by Parliament only after the month-long budget debate, which begins on February 18. The Supreme Court’s determination on the bill is due next week.
Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court, challenging the provisions of the bill.
The bill provides for the calling of fresh nominations and the holding of elections in respect of local authorities where the elections of such local authorities have been called and postponed.
Mr. Ratnayake told the Sunday Times that after the court’s determination, the bill should be passed by Parliament before the Election Commission could begin the process of calling for fresh nominations and preparing the logistics for the elections.
This process, he said, would only take place after the National New Year.
The Government has indicated that it is willing to debate and pass the bill between the budget debate, provided all parties agree to it.
The bill stipulates that the Election Commission should begin measures for holding elections no later than three months from the date of coming into operation of this Act.
