Theft of valuables during flight: Chinese passenger escapes legal action
View(s):A Chinese passenger who allegedly stole branded wristwatches and other valuables from the luggage of another passenger on a SriLankan Airlines flight from Dubai to Colombo this week escaped legal action, as the victim did not wish to pursue his complaint, the Sunday Times learns.
Upon finding several items had gone missing from his hand luggage stowed in the overhead compartment, the victim began to look for them and found them in the possession of a Chinese passenger.
In keeping with procedure, the airline contacted local authorities at BIA, a SriLankan Airlines official said. However, the passenger concerned did not wish to pursue the matter further by lodging a police complaint since the items had been recovered. Accordingly, the Chinese passenger was allowed to leave, and he subsequently left the country.
The official urged passengers to be vigilant regarding their belongings, particularly on long-haul flights, and to keep their passport and any valuables they have in their possession whenever possible.
