One of fashion’s highly anticipated events, Colombo Fashion Week (CFW), has once again established February as the definitive month of fashion in Sri Lanka, with its Summer edition to take place from February 19 -22. Now in its 22nd year, CFW takes pride in being one of four fashion weeks in Asia that have surpassed 20 years, having created an ecosystem that provides support to emerging designers and playing a pivotal role in fortifying Sri Lanka’s fashion design industry.

In a media briefing held on Thursday, Ajai Vir Singh, Founder of CFW, highlighted the event’s transformative impact over the past 22 years, saying, “Colombo Fashion Week has consistently demonstrated its commitment to developing Sri Lanka’s fashion industry through strategic international partnerships and innovative platforms.”

A founding member of the newly created BRICS International Fashion Federation, CFW will be a part of a designer exchange programme, allowing Sri Lankan designers to showcase their work internationally while welcoming BRICS-affiliated designers to Colombo. Additionally, CFW introduces the Craft Fashion Fund to encourage young designers to engage with and incorporate Sri Lankan crafts into their collections, an approach that has been successful in other South Asian countries where traditional craft has helped to establish an identity unique to them.

“This fund will select two designers who use batik and crafts other than batik because we realise that for a Sri Lankan design identity to be built up, the use of craft is very important,” noted Ajai.

CFW will showcase designers across three of the city’s prestigious locations, key partners Shangri-La, Taj Samudra, and Cinnamon Grand. “We looked at creating destination marketing and showcasing Colombo as a vibrant city, and we look forward to expanding this further as we go,” said Ajai.

The shows will feature local and international talent, including designers from India, Italy, and Russia. Over 30 designers will exhibit their creations on the ramp – 15 emerging designers alongside established names such as Fouzul Hameed, Sonali Dharmawardena, Asanka De Mel, Aslam Hussein, Kamil Hewawitharana, Dimuthu Sahabandu and Charini Suryiage, as well as foreign designers Rimzim Dadu, Cettina Bucca, Suneet Varma, and J.J. Valaya.
