After your A/L’ s you may be aspiring to be a teacher to fulfill your dream and translate your vision into reality. Congratulations! you have made a wise decision regarding your future career. The reasons to choose the teaching Profession could be due to the facts that you would have been inspired by your teacher, or you want to follow your Parents’ footsteps or their plans, or you are self-motivated and inspired to teach the students to make them knowledgeable and worthy citizens of our Motherland, etc.

Teaching is the noble profession on earth. It involves the person to be a Pedagogue, Effective Educator, Coach, Guide, Motivator and inspiring person, Sculptor, Moderator, Facilitator, leader, Guardian and teacher par excellence. An exemplary teacher would mould and craft young students to become future leaders by Inculcating knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in them.

The ultimate objective of the Teaching Profession is to “ Produce multi-talented students to supercede them.

Let us now look at the holistic approach to Education.

1. Personal Life

2. Work Life. (Studies)

3. Family Life

4. Social Life

5. Religious and Spiritual Life.

PERSONAL LIFE

Personal life comprises Personality, Leadership, Attitude, Self-Discipline, Behaviour, Punctuality, regular attendance, Compassion, Honesty, Hard Work, Self-Motivation, Time management, Communication Skills, and character.

Teachers should illustrate the time invested wisely, Make use of the time spent and avoid time wastage. This will make the students find time to engage in their studies.

Imparting Knowledge is only a part of the service rendered by teachers.

The other three areas of interest should be developing skills, Inculcating values and attitudes and making these as habit formation.

STUDIES / WORK LIFE

Teachers should make the students possess the following values while studying and provide direction.

-Dedication, Determination, Discipline, resilience, perseverance and meeting deadlines.

They should reiterate the values of hard work and teach them that there is no substitute for Hard work.

If properly inculcated, these values will help the students live stress-free lives at School and home.

FAMILY LIFE

Teachers should teach their students how to be obedient to their parents and elders. How to behave in the family with their siblings and the need to uphold the family values.

If they are brought up in this manner, it will improve their Quality of life, and our Country will be a better place to Live.

SOCIAL LIFE

Teachers should help students find good friends at school and teach the values of True friendship.

The teachers should foster teamwork among students.

They should encourage the students to join and serve voluntary service Associations and clubs, such as Scouting and Literary Associations

Learning the values of those Associations will make the students service-oriented and service-minded individuals when they become adults.

We need them to serve our Motherland in the future.

In my humble opinion, “Children are the heart of Education” and “future of our Nation” and “Treasure Trove”.

Hence, teachers play a pivotal role in preparing students to meet challenges boldly and navigate their lives towards success.

RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL LIFE

It is sad to note that some categories of schools do not have “Religion”, as one of the subjects, in the students’ curriculum.

Human values have been eroded, and not teaching religion to students may be the main reason for that.

Hence, I humbly request our government to kindly consider looking into this particular gap in the Sri Lankan Education system and take immediate steps to make religion a compulsory subject and introduce spiritualism as a new subject for students, in order to make them valuable citizens of our Motherland.

The government should kindly consider introducing spiritual education to all teachers in Sri Lanka and make it a mandatory subject, for them to be eligible to be a teacher, as it is the need of the hour.

CONCLUSION

The need of the hour is a holistic approach to your noble Profession.

By fulfilling the duties outlined in the article,

I am confident that you could produce students superseding you and make them future Leaders of our Motherland and globe.

Hence, I call upon the teachers to play a pivotal role in the lives of our future generations. Their future is in your hands!
