Ministry to introduce monitoring mechanism for private universities

The Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC) is to introduce a monitoring and registration mechanism for private universities shortly.

The decision follows a meeting last week between non-state universities and the Deputy Minister of Education Dr Madhura Seneviratne.

The lack of monitoring of private universities was one of the issues the ministry faced in maintaining standards, it was pointed out.

The deputy minister said that the universities to be monitored are in addition to some 27 non-state universities which have already registered.

He said some of the private universities had advertised themselves as affiliated with foreign universities but lack a proper accreditation system.

They would have to register with UGC if they wanted to continue in business, he added.

The ministry will conduct a survey on how many institutions are continuing without registration, as carrying out such business without registration was a violation of the existing regulations, he said.

Existing laws could be used for the registration and monitoring process.

Part of the monitoring process will be looking into academic qualifications of the lecturers, the quality of the courses offered and infrastructure facilities.

Institutions’ operation could be suspended if they do not meet the required standards, he said. “We have a responsibility of ensuring the quality of courses,” he added.
