RISTCON 2025 showcases research insights

The 12th Ruhuna International Science and Technology Conference (RISTCON 2025), held recently at the Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna, underscored the university’s commitment towards advancing scientific research.

Initially launched in 2002 as the Science Symposium to share national research findings, the conference has since evolved.

This year’s edition, on the theme ‘Advancing Science and Technology Research for a Better Future’, highlighted the critical role science and technology play in addressing global challenges and shaping a more sustainable world.

The RISTCON 2025 inauguration was graced by chief guest senior professor R M U S K Rathnayaka, competent authority of the University of Ruhuna, and professor (Mrs) D H N Munasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna.

The event featured a keynote address by Professor Archana Sharma, a renowned physicist and senior scientist at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. Two plenary speeches were delivered by academics.

The first, presented by Professor W A Priyanka P De Silva, Professor of Zoology at the University of Peradeniya, explored ‘Zoonotic Diseases and Vector-Host Dynamics: Key Research Priorities and Control Strategies for Public Health in Tropical Regions.’

The second plenary, delivered by Professor Channa De Silva, Professor of Chemistry and Head of the Department at Western Carolina University, USA, focused on the ‘Microwave-Assisted Preparation of Lanthanide-Based Nanoparticles for Luminescent and Biomedical Applications.’

These presentations offered insights into cutting-edge research.

The event was elevated by the participation of heads of departments, senior professors, academic staff, and students of the faculty.

RISTCON 2025 showcased the global quality of research, emphasizing the role of scientific development, particularly for countries like Sri Lanka which is navigating economic challenges.

With 190 submissions and 147 accepted presentations, the conference featured an increasing volume and quality of impactful studies across diverse disciplines. This resilience of Sri Lanka’s academic community demonstrates its commitment to advancing knowledge, addressing both local and global challenges despite resource constraints. (CK)
