Two foreigners die while swimming in Bentota, one of a heart attack
View(s):A 56-year-old Ukrainian naval officer drowned in Bentota this week, while he was bathing near the breakwater in front of a well known tourist hotel, a coroner’s court was told.
The Ukrainian was identified as Sandsley Marshkovidsky. The naval officer, his wife and two children who arrived in Sri Lanka on January 30 were staying at a small seaside hotel
The tragedy occurred on February 11 when he was dragged into the sea while bathing. Two life guards had rescued him and given him CPR before taking him to Bentota hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on admission
The post mortem inquiry was carried out by Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Noel Perera who concluded that death was due to drowning.
The inquirer into sudden deaths for Balapitiya area A.C.P. Perera said the tourist had drowned after being dragged in by a strong current.
In another incident, also in Bentota, a 61- year-old foreign tourist had died on February 10, while swimming. He had died of a heart attack.
The deceased was identified as Alexid Porroh from Kazakhstan.
His wife, Tericiya Cova (54) said she was seated on a small rock beside her husband when the incident occurred. She added that her husband was bathing when he suddenly fell into the water. She said her husband was then rushed to Bentota hospital.
Judicial medical officer E.DA Dissanayake who conducted the post mortem inquiry said death was due to a heart attack.
The wife of the deceased had told the JMO that her husband was a heart patient and had suffered two heart attacks prior to this incident. The inquirer into sudden deaths A.C.P. Perera confirmed that death was due to a heart attack.
