Gateway boys and girls triumph at U-19 International Schools Basketball

Gateway College, Colombo once again proved its basketball supremacy, securing championship titles in both the Under-19 Girls’ and Boys’ categories at the International Schools Under-19 Basketball Tournament 2024. Organised by Gateway College, the tournament brought together top international schools, but Gateway’s exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination saw them emerge victorious in both divisions.

The Under-19 girls’ team of Gateway was a force to be reckoned with, displaying remarkable precision and power throughout the tournament. Their opening match saw them dominate Asian International School with a commanding 37-15 victory. Their defensive strategy was impeccable, while offensive plays were equally efficient.

The champion Boys team

In their second match, Gateway faced Horizon College International and secured a convincing 44-27 win. Their well-rounded performance set the tone for the remainder of the tournament, showcasing their adaptability and consistency. In the quarter-finals Gateway defeat Elizabeth Moir School with an impressive 59-17 scoreline, and they continued to shine in the semi-finals, overcoming Lyceum International School, Panadura with a commanding 63-33 victory.

The final was a true test of their championship mentality, as Gateway triumphed over Horizon College International in a thrilling encounter to secure a 74-54 win and the Under-19 Girls’ Championship.

The Under-19 boys’ team mirrored the girls’ success, delivering a stellar performance from the outset. In their opening match, Gateway breezed past Wycherley International School with a dominant 69-17 win, followed by another commanding 63-12 victory against Lyceum International School, Panadura.

In the quarter-finals, Gateway defeated Asian International School 47-32, and their momentum continued in the semi-finals, to beat Horizon College International 76-27. In a high-energy final, Gateway faced Colombo International School and clinched the title with an exciting 85-78 victory, solidifying their status as Under-19 Boys’ champions.

Individual players were recognised for their exceptional performances throughout the tournament. In the Under-19 Girls’ category Sarini Mallikarachchi was named the Most Valuable Player for her leadership and all-around contributions. Mayumi Liyanage earned the Best Defensive Player award. Hasandi Peiris of Horizon College International was awarded Best Offensive Player.

In the Under-19 Boys’ category Dulain Thewarapperuma of Gateway College was named Most Valuable Player. Ashain Thewarapperuma was honoured with the Best Defensive Player award. Moosa Mohamed of Colombo International School received the Best Offensive Player award.

This double victory marks another outstanding achievement for Gateway College, reaffirming their prowess in the basketball circuit. The Under-19 girls’ team continued their winning streak, following their success in previous years, while the Under-19 boys extended their dominance by adding another championship to their collection. The teams were coached by Tharindu Fernando, and his team of coaches and sports coordinators.
