Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Lalith Jayasinghe was found guilty for the second time in his career of harbouring a suspect in a murder case, with the Vavuniya High Court sentencing him to four years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) this week after finding him guilty of harbouring a key suspect in the 2015 rape and murder of schoolgirl Sivalokananthan Vidya in Pungudutivu, Jaffna.

Vavuniya High Court Judge Mohammed Mihail sentenced the former SDIG after finding him guilty of harbouring Mahalingam Sasaikumar alias “Swiss Kumar,” a main suspect in Vidya’s rape and murder. In addition to the four years RI, the court also imposed a fine of Rs. 50, 000 on the accused.

The court also imposed the same prison sentence and fine on former Sub Inspector Sri Gajan, who was found guilty of aiding and abetting the former SDIG.

SDIG Jayasinghe was earlier sentenced to four years rigorous imprisonment by the Ratnapura High Court after being found guilty of trying to shield from investigation a former state minister who was a suspect in a double murder in Kahawatta. He has appealed that sentence.
