Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa recently made an appeal to medical professionals working abroad to return home to Sri Lanka and serve the people who have paid for their education. They need your services, he said,

He made the plea while declaring open a plastic surgery unit at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital. The unit was donated by a member of the Kandy Bar Senior Attorney Nanda Sennayake.

The minister said there are only eight Specialist in the country to carry on the burden of plastic surgery.

Dr. Jayatissa addressing the opening said in the past 10-20 years the medical field of the country had been stagnant and it was now time to rehabilitate it. He added that Sri Lanka is considered as having the best medical service in South Asia.

He said all the equipment of the unit had been donated by Mr. Sennayake and he expressed his gratitude to him on behalf of the Ministry.

The minister said that the people had given them a mandate to give them a decent living standard and that goal has to be attainted and that is not a political gimmick. He said they have also embarked on a genuine effort to give the people a medical service they deserve.

He said the country needs 20,000 Medical Professionals but there are only 17,000. Within two and half months it is an impossible task to put right the wrongs done in the past 15 years, he said.

When the Sunday Times asked Mr. Sennayake what made him make such a donation, he said he had always wanted to do something for the country and the idea came to him when he heard about the dearth of equipment at the Peradeniya Hospital.
