Wijeya journalist acquitted of charges; no evidence she took courtroom pix
View(s):Moratuwa Magistrate Uddala Suwan Durugoda this week acquitted Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. journalist Rekha Tharangani Fonseka from a case filed against her on charges of taking photographs inside the courtroom in defiance of instructions from a public official.
The magistrate acquitted the journalist after ruling that police had been unable to prove the charges against her, bringing to an end a case that had been heard for seven years. Moratuwa Police had charged her with taking photographs inside the courtroom. However, in her evidence, then Moratuwa Magistrate’s Court registrar Siriyawathie Fonseka said she did not see the journalist taking photographs inside the courtroom.
She further testified that she did not lodge a complaint against the journalist with the Moratuwa Police but had only sent a letter to police on the instructions of the then Moratuwa Magistrate.
The journalist testified that there was no complaint against her. She also pointed out that there were no court productions or any photographs to support the charge.
Having considered the facts, the court delivered the verdict acquitting and releasing her from all charges.
Attorneys-at-Law Vishwa Gunaratne and Darshika Perera appeared for Wijeya Newspapers Ltd.
