Visakha oarswomen impress with 11 medals at Indoor Nationals

Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo clinched the Junior Girls Championship and shared the Open Girls Championship at the 2nd Sri Lanka Indoor Rowing Nationals, organised by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka and held at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre in Battaramulla.

Led by Navithmi Perera, the 25-member Visakha crew rowed their way to glory, competing in five age categories, including Under-14, Under-16, Under-19, Under-23, and Open. Their relentless strokes saw them emerge as the overall Junior Girls champions while tying with Army Sports Club for the Open Women’s title.

Visakha Vidyalaya, who took up competitive rowing since 2020, has swiftly risen to the top left the rest of the field in their wake. They topped the medals tally with six gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. With 270 entries across the two-day regatta, they became the highest medal winners, proving their strength on the indoor rowing stage.

Two standout rowers, Dinali Gamage and Imavi Mahawatte, rowed in sync to secure three gold medals each, collectively contributing six individual gold medals to the Visakha tally in the Under-19 and Under-23 categories. Their commitment and endurance ensured Visakha’s dominance in the championship.

The team’s success was steered under the guidance of Teacher-in-Charge Subodha Wijesinghe and Assistant Supuni Lakshani. With a squad packed with talent, the Visakhians showed their depth, grit, and unity in competition.

The full Visakha Vidyalaya rowing team included Hirundi Gamage, Dulandee Bastian, Seneli Perera, Imandi Mahawatte, Anumi Yatigammana, Saheli Senanayake Perera, Menoli Yatigammana, Navithmee Perera, Sanuthmee Perera, Dinuli Dahanayake, Yesali Jayakody, Anusara Akmeemana, Saheli Kinara Perera, Rivini Karasinghe, Sethuli Gamage, Dinagi Gamage, Dunelie Rajapaksha, Chenaya Mohottiarachchi, Jenuli Gunawardena, Sethini Ranawaka, Sanuli Wellala, and Sashenka Weerarathna.
